Students from all across Midcoast Maine -- from Wiscasset Middle High School, Medomak Valley High School and Lincoln Academy -- got a hands-on look at healthcare careers at MaineHealth's Healthcare Career Exploration Day!
WMHS Junior Delaney Withers, a Junior at WMHS, loved the exposure to real-world activities: “My favorite activity out of all of them was being able to learn how to put a real IV (Intravenous, therapy) into somebody. I was able to practice inserting a real IV into a fake arm with fake blood.”
The purpose was to give students hands-on experience with different healthcare professions to help them decide on a future path and get them excited about staying in the medical field in Maine.
Delaney had an opportunity to interact and learn from physicians and Registered Nurses, “I was also able to talk to surgeons, learn how they stitch the skin of people, and I learned how to properly get a gown/glove on and keep it sterile. When we were learning to stitch, we used fake skin and made a slice into it, then we used an actual needle and thread that they use in the operating room.”
What a terrific opportunity to help Midcoast students learn all about careers right here in Maine!
