On October 7, 2025, Upper Kennebec Valley Jr./Sr. High School had the distinct honor of hosting the Maine Supreme Judicial Court for a live court session. In a rare and meaningful opportunity, students, staff, and members of the community were able to witness the state's highest court in action—right from their own school auditorium!
The Justices of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court heard oral arguments in three real cases, giving students a firsthand look at the judicial process and the workings of appellate law. This visit was part of the Court’s ongoing educational initiative to increase public understanding of the Maine judicial system by bringing the courtroom to communities across the state.
The event served as a powerful learning experience for students, many of whom had never observed a court proceeding before. With the courtroom temporarily set up in the school, the proceedings were conducted with the same decorum and formality as they would be in Augusta or Portland. The attorneys, took time to speak with students, answer questions, and help demystify the legal system.
Administrators, educators, and community members expressed their appreciation for the Court’s commitment to civic education and its willingness to engage directly with rural schools. The day left a lasting impression, sparking curiosity and thoughtful discussion among students about law, government, and public service.
Upper Kennebec Valley Jr./Sr. High School extends its sincere thanks to the Maine Supreme Judicial Court and its staff for making this memorable day possible and for investing in the education and civic development of Maine’s youth.
