Messalonskee Middle School & Gulf of Maine Research Institute team up for unit on bees

At Messalonskee Middle School, students in Mrs. Ripa’s science classes learned about honeybees from guest Brittany Fairfield. Brittany brought in a closed hive of honeybees and presented about the life cycle, importance of, and threats to honeybees. It was fun to find the queen, learn many amazing facts about honeybees, and taste honey. This visit was part of a Gulf of Maine Research Institute unit on bees, blueberries, and climate change. Students also tracked bees around the school throughout the day and compared the outside temperature to confirm that warmer temperatures mean more bumblebees out pollinating.
