In late February members of Windham High School's Civil Rights Team and the 'Can We?' project received a first-hand look at state government in action by talking with their local lawmakers and observing action in the Maine Legislature.

The event, hosted by the League of Women Voters, allowed the students to observe the State of the Judiciary Address from Justice Valerie Stanfill. The students also met and engaged with discussions with their local representatives: Mark Cooper (House District 107) and Barbara Bagshaw (House District 106), both of Windham, as well as Rolf Olsen (House District 86) of Raymond. Additionally, they spoke with State Senator Tim Nangle (Senate District 26) of Windham.

The event was an excellent example of the important role that student voice can play within schools and state government!
